Tenzing TZ TR18 Review: The Ultimate Lightweight Turkey Recliner

For years, turkey hunters have faced a frustrating trade-off: carry a heavy, bulky chair for comfort or opt for a flimsy foam pad that leaves your back aching by 9:00 AM.

Enter the Tenzing TZ TR18 Turkey Recliner.

Building on the legacy of the original TP14, Tenzing has managed to shave significant weight without losing the "sit anywhere" utility that made the series famous. If you’re a "run-and-gun" hunter who still values a comfortable afternoon nap against a ridge, this might be the last vest you ever buy.

The Evolution: From TP14 to TZ TR18

The most striking improvement in the TR18 is the weight. Tenzing listened to the mobile hunter and trimmed the fat.

  • Weight: Reduced to a lean 5 lbs 4 oz.
  • Storage: A massive 3,200 cubic inches of space.
  • The Build: A hybrid design that functions as a high-capacity pack and a rigid tactical chair.

Key Features & Field Performance

1. The Spring-Loaded Recliner System

The standout feature is the integrated aluminum frame. Unlike standard vests that require a perfectly vertical tree to lean against, the TR18 features spring-loaded legs that deploy instantly.

Field Pro-Tip: This system is a game-changer for hunting "open" hardwoods or field edges where the only available tree is too small or too slanted to support your weight.

2. Tactical Call Organization

Efficiency is the difference between a notched tag and a long walk back to the truck. The TR18 offers:

  • Angled Box Call Pocket: Designed for silent, one-handed retrieval.
  • Dual Pot Call Compartments: Securely holds up to 4 calls.
  • Quick-Tack Striker Pockets: Fits 3 strikers for easy surface-matching.

3. All-Day Ergonomics

Hunting in the late spring heat can be brutal. Tenzing utilized air-mesh shoulder straps and a channeled backrest to create airflow between your body and the pack. This "air-cooled" design prevents the dreaded sweat-soaked back during long hikes.

Is the Tenzing TZ TR18 Worth It?

If you are a stationary hunter who never strays more than 200 yards from the truck, this might be more vest than you need. However, for the tactical hunter, the TR18 is unrivaled.

It solves the two biggest problems in the spring woods: back fatigue and clutter. With 3,200 cubic inches of room, you can easily fit your decoys, snacks, rain gear, and a limit-pushing tom in the extra-large rear compartment without feeling weighed down by a bulky, traditional frame.

Pros

  • Remarkably Light: At just over 5 lbs, it defies its "recliner" category.
  • Torture-Tested: Built with a 60/40 Poly-Cotton blend that handles briars and thickets with ease.
  • Self-Sustaining: The leg system allows you to set up literally anywhere.

Cons

  • Price Point: As a premium vest, it’s an investment, but one backed by Tenzing’s reputation for durability.

Final Verdict

The Tenzing TZ TR18 is a masterclass in "comfort meets tactical precision." It takes the best parts of a hunting chair and fuses them into a lightweight, high-capacity vest. This spring, don't choose between mobility and comfort—take both.
